Vanitas No Carte: A New Take On Vampires

Aired in the Summer of 2021, Vanitas No Carte or The Case Study of Vanitas is a 12 episode long anime series by Bones based upon a manga series with the same name, written and illustrated by Jun Mochizuki. This anime offers viewers a somewhat unusual story about Vampires which I am going to honestly review in this article along with other bits of this show.

Plot and progression:

Vanitas is a wretched vampire who is constantly looked down on for being born under a blue moon by his own kind. He is believed by many to have created a cursed grimoire called ‘The Book of Vanitas’. The story goes that there will come a day when Vanitas will use this book to seek revenge against all crimson moon vampires.

Noé Archiviste too, is a vampire, with the goal of finding the doomed Book of Vanitas in order to save all vampires from bearing any curse. All of this is set in the 19th century in Paris, where both humans and vampires live. While on an airship to travel abroad, Archviste’s life is saved from a vampire attack thanks to a strange doctor who claims to be Vanitas with the very book in hand that Archviste is looking for. However, he is only a human but has gotten both his name and the petrifying book from Vanitas himself. Since the goals of Archiviste and Vanitas align with each other, they join hands to protect every vampire.

Music and animation:

The animation of this anime is a job well done for sure. Just take the outfits for instance, the

amount of detail that each one has is truly mind-blowing. This anime easily ticks the quality box for both scenes set in dark light and bright light.

As far as music is concerned, the opening theme of the anime ‘Sora to Utsuro’ is very catchy and fun to listen to despite being somewhat generic. The ending theme ‘Zero’ on the other hand is my personal favorite because of how amazingly it complements the whole vampire aesthetic of the show.

Final thoughts:

A huge amount of credit goes to the cast of this series for making it so entertaining. From banter to general interactions, all key elements in Noe and Vanitas’ partnership have been excellently executed. In the recipe of this anime, the secret ingredient used to keep viewers glued to their screens is an unexpected amount of twists that don’t let you move from the edge of your seat and make a plot about overused monsters i.e. vampires completely stand out. I would like to conclude this article by giving this anime a solid rating of 8/10. It sets a very amusing tone for viewers from the beginning and is definitely worth a watch. It does not showcase a typical lust of blood approach which is uncommon to see in a vampire-based anime. Make sure to let me know your thoughts on Vanitas No Carte, thanks for reading!
