Erza is known to have very personal ties with the dragon slayers. She was abandoned in the alleys of Rosemary as a child by her mother, who, when turned into a dragon, was later saved by Zeref. She eventually ended up in a village that was attacked by a Zeref-following cult, got captured, and sent into slavery for building the Tower of Heaven. There she met Jellal and Rob, with whom she planned a failed rebellion, and ended up losing her right eye from punishment torture. Jellal saved her, and Erza successfully redeemed her life back after a second successful escape attempt. She joined the fairy Tail guild afterwards and met great people who showed her love and respect.

Erza had faced enough losses. The love she discovered in her newfound family was enough of a reason for her to toughen up, and make protecting her family her life's only purpose from now on.

Erza possesses great mastery over her signature form of magic, Requip – The Knight, which is a form of spatial magic and allows her to switch between hundreds of armors at unimaginable speeds. Her noteworthy sword magic allows her to use different kinds of sword attacks and achieve great offensive techniques. Telekinesis is also among Erza’s strong suits that enable her to lead attacks using multiple swords at once. Thanks to Wendy, Erza also learnt to make use of Natsu's and Grey’s magic on her swords through Enchantment.
