5 Lessons we learned from Ace

As the son of the Pirate King, Ace was born with a destiny far more complex than almost everyone else. If found out, the Marines would go to any lengths necessary to make sure his existence is eradicated from this world even if he is still inside his mother’s womb.

That’s right, Ace’s mere existence was perceived as a threat to the world, by the world.

When you think about it, both Ace and Robin shared the same kind of fate, and Luffy is not very different too, as he is the son of the most wanted man.

Which is exactly why Ace’s life makes him such a legend, and believe it or not, there is a lot you can learn from this fictional character.

Just remember, even though Ace is dead, his legacy continues, not just in the story but also among us fans.

1 - We don’t get to choose our Father

“Yamato!! We don’t get to choose our fathers, your hands being bound are one thing, but even though you hate your father so much… why have you allowed your heart to be bound as well.”

For as long as he can remember, Ace hated Roger, and he hated everyone else to.

But this all started to change when he met Sabo and Luffy. He was saved, and from there on out, Ace started living for the people who were close to him.

He becomes brothers with both Sabo and Luffy by exchanging cups of sake.

From there on out, he chose who is his family, he refused to be tied down by the legacy of his dead father.

And when Sengoku asked him, who is your father?

He proudly said, “My father is… WhiteBeard.”

2 - Live a life of no Regrets

“We have to live a life of no regrets.”

Ace becomes aware of how there is a life outside his destiny. He tells Luffy that they have to live their life without regrets. Someday, when the time is right, they’ll both set sail and live however they want.

Furthermore, one of Ace’s widely known phrases is, “Start Living before you start dying.”

And then, in his final moments, he holds Luffy and tells him that,

“Luffy, the way that I had lived my life, I have absolutely no regrets.”

3 - If I run away, I’ll lose Something Important

“Sometimes the blood rushes to my head and I feel like, if I run, I’ll lose something important.”

Ever since he was old enough to think, Ace had this insane desire to never run away from a battle. This belief became even more firm when he realized there are people he wants to protect.

“Once I start a fight, neither side ever escapes.”

4 - Before I die, I’ll find the Meaning of my Life

“Before I die, I’ll find the meaning of my life in this world.”

Throughout his Life, Ace never wanted to be something as grandeur as the Pirate King, he simply wanted to set sail and live a life without regrets, and as he lived on the seas, he found people whom he could call his family.

And then, before he died, he finally realizes, the reason he lived… and the meaning it had…

“Old man, everyone! And you Luffy. Even though I’ve been good for nothing my whole life, even though I have the blood of a demon within me. You guys still loved me! Thank you so much!”

5 - Protect Those You hold Dear at any Cost

In his heart, Ace had always carried an insane amount of thirst to protect those he held dear.

He used to live in darkness, always questioning his existence, and wondering if it would’ve been better for him to never have been born.

That’s why, even though he strived to never show his back to his enemy, not to mention, his back had the whitebeard trademark.

However, when Akainu went after Luffy, Ace didn’t flinch, not even for an instance before using his back to protect the little brother he always held dear to him.

He used his own body as shield, to save the life of his younger brother.
