7 Anime with strong female lead characters

It is a prejudice of newer Anime, that they are mostly centered around a male protagonist.

However, there are a lot of anime that feature strong female characters, and these anime can be found in most any genre.

And in this post, we are going to talk about them, “7 Anime with strong female lead characters.”

Well then, shall we begin?

7. A Place further than the Universe

An inspiring story of four Japanese high school girls who venture outside the norm of their everyday lives and embark on an adventure of a lifetime.

It all starts when a considerably normal girl named Mari Tamaki feels overwhelmed by the idea that her youth might just end before she can go out into the world and feel her youth in full bloom as she ventures on an unreal adventure.

This intrinsic desire to pursue that sense of adventure lead to Tamaki’s encounter with a mysterious girl named Shirase. And this alone changes the trajectory of both of their youths.

I’d say, if you relate to the whole “desire for adventure and wonder” thing, this anime may turn out to be an oddly soothing experience.

6. Kill la Kill

This one is a rollercoaster of epic jaw dropping action and extraordinary power displays. It gives off a different kind of feeling than your usual action anime and the pacing is insane.

The story follows a young girl named Ryuuko, who lost her father and is now in the search for the one who killed him. In her possession is the missing half of the invention that her father left behind. It’s called Scissors blade, and it’s more than just a possession.

Before long, she arrives at a peculiar high school, one that is highly influenced by a hierarchy among students. And because of special uniforms, a lot of students have special abilities.

This odd school is connected to the murder of her father. How will Ryuuko proceed?

5. Shinsekai Yori (From the New World)

The story takes place in a distant future, humans have certainly evolved, not in terms of technology, but in terms of their latent abilities. They live in an odd utopia, and this is the story of five such humans.

It’s the protagonist Saki Watanabe and her four friends, from start to finish we follow these five individuals as they go through their lives in this supposed utopia.

However, there are certain secrets that lurk in the shadows of their land, not to mention, the havoc born from this unprecedented evolution.

All in all, Shinsekai Yori may not be for everybody, it is mysterious and it heavily centers around the psychological aspects of the human mind. But for a seasoned viewer who is always on the lookout for such odd yet discreet anime, this one will hit the spot just right.

4. Claymore

Set in a medieval period, there are shapeshifting creatures called Yoma, they have a strong lust for human blood, and it is difficult to spot them because they often take the shape of human to hide themselves among the common folks.

One of them happens to be in the village of a boy named Raki, and a strong woman with silver eyes is summoned to take care of this Yoma, she is what you can call a “Claymore,” they are strong female individuals who are half human and half yoma, so they take up jobs related to Yoma and then exterminate then.

Or to put it simply, they are lone warriors.

Raki’s family gets killed by that Yoma, but Claymore comes in to save his life just in time.

3. Violet Evergarden

Violet Evergarden is a sad yet beautiful tale of a young girl who lived her childhood as a war weapon, and she always lacked the inherent understanding of living in a society, the thing we call, “Common sense.”

She wonders the meaning of the word “Love,” and starts working as an auto memories doll to help write letters for people who want to convey their feelings through words.

It doesn’t start off very well, but before long, as she begins to understand ordinary human emotions, she also becomes able to write wonderful letters.

It’s a genuinely beautiful anime that leaves a major emotional impact on the viewer.

2. Revolutionary Girl Utena

This is an extremely symbolic and highly metaphorical anime that tells us a coming-of-age story, all the while touching upon sensitive topics like idealism, illusion, adulthood, and identity.

The protagonist of this story is a girl named Utena, she meets a travelling prince who consoles her after she loses her parents, but this triggers a desire within her to become a prince herself.

The prince leaves her with a strange rose crest ring and promises her that they will definitely meet again, one day.

Years pass by, and Utena enters an academy, and it is here that she ends up in the middle of a dangerous game, together with others who bear the same kind of ring that she has.

But after facing the reality of this situation, Utena realizes that she has only one choice and that is to revolutionize the world as she knows it.

1. Black Lagoon

This anime is highly action oriented, but the realistic premise and likeable main characters make it better than the sum of its parts.

The story takes place in a crime ridden city of Thailand where even the most righteous of organizations have fallen victim to extreme corruption. It is the center of illegal activities, and the most frequently visited place by crime syndicates.

Now, in the middle of it all, there is a group called “Black Lagoon,” you can think of them as modern-day pirates. They take an overseas Japanese office worker hostage, and oddly enough, after being in the company of these guys from Black Lagoon, he decides to join them.

As for the protagonist, her name is Revy, and she is a member of Black Lagoon as well as their most prominent fighter.

This is a very refreshing anime, and the Revy makes it even more surreal.

There you go guys, these were “7 Anime with strong female lead characters”. Of course, the list doesn’t end here, but these are few of the most prominent ones.

That’s all folks!
