Side characters that are more popular than their protagonists

The main character, commonly known as the protagonist, is the series' main focus. They are at the center of the story. However, in some circumstances, the main character isn't usually the fans' first choice. It all boils down to how the characters' roles are defined. Some supporting characters outperform the main character in one or more categories, gaining popularity among fans as a result of their charisma, prowess, quirks, story, or looks.

In this piece, we’ll be looking at 10 side characters that are more popular than the protagonist.

Kakashi Hatake

Sharingan no Kakashi, from the popular Naruto anime series, was the best sensei and a well-loved, popular, and powerful shinobi in the hidden village, as well as the 6th Hokage. What’s there not like about this ninja? With his silver-white hair and the mask, he wears throughout the series. At the age of 13, he joined the hidden leaf's elite unit, the Anbu black ops. Which was a feat that only Itachi Uchiha could do. I won’t say Kakashi was popular than Naruto but he’s a Goated character! Very popular in the series and well-loved by fans.

Gojo Satoru (Jujutsu Kaisen)

Every female’s simp/ Husbando, Almighty Gojo from Jujutsu High, starting from the episode he unmasked himself and deployed his (Dimension expansion). He's significantly more popular than Itadori (the protagonist) as he's his fun-loving childish sensei, slightly overpowered, adored by fans, and has humorous quirks comparable to Itadori's, not to mention his LOOKS! Well, that’s Gojo for you.

Killuah Zoldyck (Hunter X Hunter)

Killua of the Zoldyck Family, the Lightning god, is popularly known for his Godspeed in the series. Killua is a young assassin/Hunter and the best friend of the protagonist, Gon Freecs. Even though they are the same age, Killua is better than Gon at virtually everything. From intelligence to decision-making to combat prowess.

Killua can be matured when need is and can also be childish when having fun with his buddy, Gon. While Gon lived a fairly "normal" childhood, Killua's childhood can only be described as abnormal. Undergoing series of rigorous training to become a professional assassin at 11. He’s just a cool character loved by every HXH fan. That's all there is to Killua.

Akabane Karma (Assassination Classroom)

Karma from the popular series of assassination classroom, one of my best series! Writing about this brings back the memory of Koro-Sensei.

Karma is a student of Koro-sensei, taught at Kunugigaoka Junior High School. Notably, he was the first of the students to deal damage to Koro-sensei. He is intelligent, arrogant, lazy, and sees everything as a drag. He has also shown a strong ability to lead when forced into the role.

Nagisa Shiota, in my opinion, also qualifies to be on this list, so I'll just mention him under karma. Nagisa, a female-looking guy who is also a student of Koro-sensei. He's a cool and collected figure with a natural flair for assassination, and he's regarded as the best assassin in the class, as proven by Karma and Koro-sensei. He’s also the narrator of the series.

Nagisa and Karma are close friends who both contributed to the series' plot. Although, for whatever reason, there is a comparison between them in the community, where there’s Team Karma and Team Nagisa.

Zenitsu Agatsuma (Demon Slayer)

Zenitsu is a member of the trio squad that also includes inosuke and the protagonist Kamado Tanjiro. Zenitsu comes off as a whiny wuss who is terrified of literally everything. His wacky antics and carelessness are what makes him famous. Regardless, he's a formidable figure who hasn't yet realized his full potential. As the series unfolds, there will be more from Zenitsu to witness.

As evidenced by Naruto Uzumaki and others, the wackiness of the characters is a popular attribute to have for a Shonen protagonist. Tanjiro is a wonderful hero, all compassionate and gentle, but his personality isn't quite as interesting or unpredictable as Zenitsu’s.

There is a lot of comedy in the plot that revolves around his cowardly antics. At the same time, Zenitsu possesses a power far beyond Tanjiro's, at least in the beginning. There’s more to unveil from the series as a whole since it’s just starting.

Levi Ackerman (Attack on Titan)

Just who doesn't know who Levi is? Captain Levi is widely regarded as humanity's strongest soldier. He's a blunt, cold character that rarely expresses emotion. His demeanor is military-like, with a strict and disciplined demeanor.

Every battle scene with Levi is always a hit, as I usually watch them more than once. He makes chopping down titans look as simple as chopping vegetables. Both men and titans are terrified by his name. He is renowned to be a clean freak when not purging the world of titan.

Yoichi Hiruma (Eyeshield 21)

Hiruma, a senior student of Deimon Private Senior High School. Also, one of the three founding members of the Deimon Devil Bats alongside Ryokan Kurita and Musashi (Gen Takekura), as well as their captain and quarterback.

He's noted for his spiky hair, sharp pointy teeth that look like animal fangs, and his signature laugh, "kekeke," which is a catchy wicked cackle. Hiruma uses a frightening attitude to frighten or annoy those around him into giving him what he wants. He has a crafty, goal-oriented mentality that seems unconcerned with the tactics by which he achieves his goals.

Shoto Todoroki (My Hero Academia)

We all know how much fans are crazy for this guy. Even with a cast full of superhero’s, Shoto Todoroki is still one of the most unique characters on My Hero Academia. He possesses the ability to control fire and ice, as hinted at by his dual-colored hair.

He is likely the most powerful of his class 1-A peers, with only Midoriya and Bakugo standing a chance against him. His relationship with his father, his powers, his face, everything about Todoroki makes him a very interesting character.

L (Death Note)

L Lawliet, or simply 'L', is a character from the popular Death Note series. Every devoted Death Note fan is head over heels in love with L, a world-renowned private detective. The duel between L and Kira, the primary protagonist, Light Yagami, was a work of art. The fans were completely enthralled by an intellectual exchange between the two young males.

Roy Mustang (Full Metal Alchemist)

Roy Mustang is, in my view, one of the best-written anime characters ever. Roy Mustang is a fantastic character, and I can't express how good of a character he is. “Hero of the Ishval” Lt. Col Roy Mustang, at first glance, he may come off as a bit dorky. However, his ambition to become the next Führer of Amestris, as well as his determination to achieve that goal, make him a highly interesting and distinctive character.

Mustang was devastated when his best friend, Maes Hughes, died. Later on, his yearning for vengeance and his ambition to explore the city's mysteries propel his character development to new heights.

That’s all folks, see you soon!
